Whether it is wood, granite, corian, quartz or laminate, there are many varieties of work tops for kitchen surfaces on the market – but choosing the right one for you can often be tricky. We've summaried a few advantages and disadvantages of different kitchen work tops and our designers are also on-hand for any questions.
You may find you are swayed by the colour and style of your kitchen when choosing a work top, however, even this can take time. This guide looks at popular options including different wood work tops and granite work tops.
Wooden Work Tops
A wood finish is particularly popular for traditional kitchen designs, as it adds that finishing touch to a cottage like feel. While wood work tops look great when they are new, it's important to ensure they are high quality when installed and avoid common causes of erosion. This can happen more often around the sink and where water is more likely to sit on the surface and our expert team of fitters will ensure this is avoided.
Hard wood also is likely to stay in fashion for the foreseeable future as it has been the staple work top for decades and is still a popular choice. Whether your wood work top is a light beach to create light and space, or a dark wood like African Walnut that will create warmth and depth, wood can really add character to a kitchen.
Natural Stone Work Tops
Stone work tops such as granite, limestone and marble are also popular in kitchens. They give a clean finish and can add some interesting and stylish patterns to your kitchen design. Natural stone can be quite cold however, which is why it is popular in hot countries, however if you have a large airy kitchen beware these stone work tops tend not to add warmth.
Matching work tops with units
A common problem when re-designing a kitchen is how best match the chosen work top with their units. Our design service is a fantastic way to visualise the combinations and make an informed decision. Wood for example can be the hardest one to get right - especially if your units are a certain colour wood and you want your work tops to be wood too. Do not be shy of going for a darker colour wood as matching colour for colour can sometimes not work.
