Choosing the perfect colour for your kitchen can be a difficult task. With so many different colour schemes to choose from, here are some of our simple tips and thoughts that might help and naturally our design team are on-hand to aid the process.
Colours for your mood
If the kitchen is to become the most used room in the house, it might be worth considering looking at the way colours effect moods. Each colour has a physiological value depending on your gender, age, ethnicity and more, however everybody has an underlying feeling towards colours. What mood do you want to create in your kitchen? To create a tranquil atmosphere pale and neutral colours work best. For a more intimate and warm feel, darker colours work better.
The colour red creates more energy, and draws people together. Studies have found that the colour red raises blood levels, heart rate and speeds respiration. Yellow creates an element of joy and sunshine. It spreads out a vibe of happiness and is welcoming. However according to some, babies cry more in a yellow room and yellow also causes people to be bad tempered as it is tiring on the eyes.
Blue is a calming colour that is often used for bathrooms as it relaxes the body and reduces blood pressure. Dark blues however evoke feelings of sadness and depression. Green is considered the most restful colour on the eye and cheerful when mixed with yellow. Green is a pleasant colour that promotes togetherness.
Purple is dramatic and sophisticated associated with luxury and creativity, ideal if you want your kitchen to come across as dramatic yet chic. Orange is a bright and bubbly colour that injects enthusiasm into a room: it also lifts moods and creates energy.
Create a palette
Your kitchen doesn’t have to be just one colour, you can create a blend of colours using strong and soft tones. For example you could have one wall in a striking bold colour that will add intensity without it being overwhelming. A brighter colour will make the room appear larger than using a darker colour. If you feel that a wall is too much to give up to a bright colour why not opt for cabinet doors. A single colour cabinet door, or for example breakfast table top will hold presence in the room and instantly modernise it.
Detail
If you are opting for a plain wall colour with a neutral feel but want a bit more vibrancy, why not go for a wallpaper border or even a stencil border or tiled. Borders allow you to get really creative, adding simple detail that will have a big impact in making your kitchen look unique. Instead of small border details you could have large blocks of colour depending on the size of your kitchen and the amount of natural light, sporadic patters create a fun and friendly atmosphere.
Colours for a country kitchen
Mint greens and sage work well for country kitchens with a tan brown wood to blend you can create that Mother Nature feeling in your very own home. Cool green with white works as a good combination to keep things looking fresh. Alternatively rustic beams and dark wooden finishes help create a cosy country feel. Cream and beige will also help to create a aged feel .
Colours for Modern kitchen
Black and white chrome works well as a striking modern look. You can add character by having an additional colour for cabinet handles.
Colours for a Traditional kitchen
Go plain and simple for the traditional Georgian kitchen look. Smart and simple in classic white is always a winner. Dark grey worktops are ideal if you have children and want keep things looking clean.
